PROJECT PLANNING GUIDE
What to Plan for Stump Grinding
A stump project includes more than the visible trunk. Diameter, root flare, nearby utilities, equipment access, soil, and the intended use of the space all affect the scope.
Before you request an estimate
- Measure the stump across its widest visible point and note whether the root flare extends beyond it.
- Identify the narrowest access route and nearby fences, irrigation, walls, or landscaping.
- Call 811 before digging or grinding so underground utilities can be marked; share the mark locations during assessment.
- Decide whether you want wood chips left in place, removed, or used to fill the grind area.
- Ask the written estimate to state grinding depth, chip handling, and any restoration or hauling included.
