PROJECT PLANNING GUIDE

What to Plan for Stump Grinding

A stump project includes more than the visible trunk. Diameter, root flare, nearby utilities, equipment access, soil, and the intended use of the space all affect the scope.

Before you request an estimate

  1. Measure the stump across its widest visible point and note whether the root flare extends beyond it.
  2. Identify the narrowest access route and nearby fences, irrigation, walls, or landscaping.
  3. Call 811 before digging or grinding so underground utilities can be marked; share the mark locations during assessment.
  4. Decide whether you want wood chips left in place, removed, or used to fill the grind area.
  5. Ask the written estimate to state grinding depth, chip handling, and any restoration or hauling included.

Choose a finish that fits the future use

Grinding a stump below the surface is different from excavating the stump and root system. Explain whether you want lawn, planting space, paving, or construction afterward. Agree grinding depth and the treatment of visible roots in writing. Do not assume the same scope suits every future use or removes all roots.

Plan locating before equipment arrives

Sunshine 811 provides the Florida utility-locating process and safe-digging resources. Follow the current ticket and response process before work rather than assuming a call alone authorizes grinding. Identify customer-owned irrigation, septic components, landscape lighting, and other private facilities separately; additional locating may be needed.

Decide what happens to the chips

Discuss leaving chips, moving them, or hauling them away, and whether backfill or restoration is included. Multiple stumps can still have different access and utility constraints. Include the widest visible stump area and root flare only when safe to measure, plus the narrowest gate and surfaces the equipment would cross.
